This Finland study visa guide for Pakistani students explains how to get a Finnish residence permit for studies through Migri, the Finnish Immigration Service. Finland does not use a separate student visa for long stays โ you apply for a residence permit for studies, ideally through the online service Enter Finland.
Requirements (official Migri guidance)
- You must first have a study place at a Finnish educational institution โ admission comes before the permit application.
- Your studies must lead to a degree or vocational qualification (other studies only on reasonable grounds).
- You must document sufficient financial resources for the first year of studies โ bank statements or a scholarship covering living costs and tuition.
- You need sufficient health insurance valid for the whole stay (the required coverage depends on the length of your studies).
- You need a valid passport.
How to apply from Pakistan
- Apply through the online service Enter Finland and attach all required documents.
- Visit a Finnish mission (embassy/consulate) to prove your identity and give fingerprints โ Migri recommends checking the mission’s website for appointments.
- Track your application in Enter Finland; the decision arrives in your online account, notified by text message and email.
- If approved, your residence permit card is delivered to the Finnish mission for collection.
Migri processes all student applications as urgent. Paper applications sent by courier take several weeks longer โ online is strongly recommended.
After graduation
Graduates can apply for a residence permit to look for work, which avoids a gap between permits. Note that periods without a valid permit do not count towards permanent residence or citizenship residence requirements.
